Smart European Networks for Sensing the Environment and Internet quality - Ref. 92/26/IR

The project will develop tools and methods to operate global telecommunication networks as large-scale distributed sensors. We will createsensitive, high-resolution photonic techniques to measure optical-cable deformation interferometrically using low-phase-noise lasers,integrating these sources on chip to overcome the bulk, cost, and scalability limits of current systems. In parallel, we will design a networkarchitecture that exposes sensing elements to the control layer and converts their data into actionable information. This will supportsustainable resource use, self-healing through early fault detection, and rapid responses to hazards affecting people and critical infrastructure. Combining expertise in optical networks, photonics, seismology, and network operation, the consortium will conduct longterm tests on fibres carrying live traffic, improve data interpretation, and share results with the scientific community.
