- The contract holder will perform an innovative estimation of the natural nutrient loads delivered to the Lombardy lakes from their watersheds, through eco-hydrological modeling with SWAT+. In the models, anthropised areas will be converted back to natural ones from the point of view of nutrient production. This will be done through models for the reconstruction of the original land use. The research programme falls within the activities of the AURIGA project and focuses on the theoretical and experimental investigation of mass transfer, the modelling of multiphase reactors using ionic liquids for CO₂ absorption, and the integration of such reactors at system level. First, experimental campaigns for the investigation of mass transfer will be designed and supervised. Second, a multiphase reactor model will be developed and integrated at system level, with the aim of optimising reactor design and performing a techno-economic comparison with conventional technologies. Subsequently, real case studies will be identified and analysed.

The research position will be integrated within the ERC project "Communication in Ancient Anatolia". The researcher will study three ancient text corpora (Lydian, Hieroglyphic Luwian and Phrygian) in conjunction with the other team members, and relate the findings to external text sources, to address the question of narrative bias and its motivation. This is to be analyzed in its cultural and historical background, with a focus on cultural differences in external and internal voices. Given the fragmentary text corpora studied, archaeological data needs to be likewise considered. Besides knowledge of the three relevant Anatolian languages, knowledge of Akkadian and Greek, as well as a degree in Ancient History and a background in Archaeology is required. The successful candidate is required to work with the project internal database structure and co-organize events and contribute to their publication, as well as to produce to joint and individual published work, as per annual goals.

The research program is focused on the derivation of a hydrological characterization of the terrain and its deformation over time based on repeat pass interferometric data collected by a system of mono- and multi-static Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) flown onboard Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). The reseach targets all applications for which accurate knowledge of terrain conditions, considering both its hydrological status and deformation over time, can make a difference in mapping and monitoring services. The research focuses on critical situations like Disaster Management and Response, and early warning system in civil and operational industrial scenarios, like large open pit mines, areas subject to landslides hazards, or large civil infrastructural development areas.

Referendums are a fundamental tool for giving “shape” to popular sovereignty, but the value of popular decisions in a “political democracy” is unclear. The Italian Constitution, which recognises the regulatory and consultative functions of referendums, leaves undefined the “follow-up” to decisions taken in abrogative referendums with regard to political bodies. In practice, other functions of referendums are emerging, such as “polls” or “alternatives” to representation. Referendums can have an impact at every level of power organisation, but the outcome seems to be very different when moving from the local to the national and European levels. Returning to an in-depth examination of the theoretical reasons and experiences of referendums, including from a comparative perspective, can provide interpreters with new perspectives that are useful in a context of “crisis” in political democracies and growth of electoral “abstentionism".

Advanced morphological techniques (multiphoton confocal microscopy, live holotomography), molecular biology methods (real-time PCR, Western blotting), and analyses of metabolic pathways related to cellular stress, including the unfolded protein response, will be applied. The aim is to create translational models for pharmacological screening and personalized assays, with a focus on orthopedic diseases of high incidence or severity (neoplasms, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis), while reducing the use of animal models.

The research activity will include the optimization of the whole-body MRI acquisition protocol, for which proven expertise of the candidate and adequate basic knowledge in the onco-hematologic field are required to collaborate effectively with specialists and develop shared research strategies. The project also involves performing whole-body MRI in selected patient cohorts using protocols designed to define the role of the technique in conditions such as multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, lymphoma and, when appropriate, other solid tumors with skeletal tropism, such as renal and breast cancer. The work will include image interpretation and reporting, data collection and analysis, and correlation with clinical and laboratory information, as well as comparison with standard imaging techniques. Patients will be assessed at baseline and during follow-up to compare diagnostic performance and evaluate any diagnostic or prognostic advantage of whole-body MRI.

The research activity aims to improve the performance of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) by developing 3D-printed titanium electrodes using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology to achieve trabecular and porous structures optimised for microbial growth. Titanium is chosen for its biocompatibility, high conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ensuring greater efficiency and durability. Electronic circuits will be developed for the electrical characterisation of the cells and the management of the energy generated. The ultimate goal is to enable battery-free wireless sensors for smart agriculture and environmental monitoring, demonstrating a sustainable alternative to traditional batteries.

The research activity focuses on the study of the mechanical interaction between the polymer matrix and carbon nanotubes in nanocomposites. In the first phase, a critical review of the literature will be carried out on numerical and experimental methodologies used to investigate the mechanical behavior of these materials at the nanoscale. Subsequently, a molecular dynamics model will be developed to simulate the matrix–nanotube interaction, analyzing the effects of adhesion, orientation, aggregation, and loading conditions on the mechanical response of the nanocomposite. Finally, the simulation results will be integrated into continuum mechanics models to formulate a constitutive law that accounts for the observed microstructural effects, validated through comparison with available experimental data and implementable in finite element simulations for engineering applications.

The activities for this project are centred on developing and assessing functionalized porous transport layers (PTLs) for use in both the anode and cathode of alkaline membrane water electrolyzers. The work includes selecting suitable PTL materials and applying surface functionalization treatments, followed by detailed physico-chemical characterization to understand their structural and chemical properties. These PTLs are then incorporated into electrodes and complete membrane–electrode assemblies, which are evaluated under different operating conditions to determine their electrochemical performance. Long-term durability tests are carried out to identify degradation mechanisms and quantify performance losses over time, supported by post-operation analyses of the materials.

The activities include field tests (agronomic management of experimental plots, application of foliar treatments, collection of biometric and production data) and in the laboratory (extraction and quantification of essential oils). The research program will also include the uploading of data to an Excel spreadsheet and the related mathematical-statistical processing for the correct interpretation of the results

The research program focuses on identifying effective antitumor agents against glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) that act through a multitarget mechanism. GBM is a highly aggressive brain tumor with poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. The project aims to develop new multitarget ligands by combining two emerging targets: Sigma Receptors (SRs), involved in cell proliferation and overexpressed in tumors, and the proteasome, whose dysfunction promotes tumor growth. The simultaneous modulation of SRs and the proteasome is unexplored and potentially therapeutic. The multitarget ligands will be tested on GBM cell lines to assess their cytotoxicity and mechanism of action. The resulting data will guide SAR studies, and the most promising candidates will be evaluated using organoids, mouse pharmacokinetic studies, and zebrafish assays, in compliance with the 3Rs, to select the best molecules for in vivo testing.

The research project will focus on particle physics and fundamental interactions and in particular on rich dark sectors, i.e., extensions of the SM below the electroweak scale with weak couplings to visible particles (thus "dark") with a rich structure, with multiple particles and interactions, in the context of the ERC DarkSHunt project. In these cases, the breaking of dark symmetry can generate gravitational waves when such a phase transition is of the first order. If it is supercooled, it could also explain the recent discovery of a stochastic background of gravitational waves from PTA experiments. The project will study the theoretical aspects of phase transitions by analyzing them from an analytical and numerical viewpoint, with the ELENA code, and considering the subsequent production of gravitational waves. It will compare the results with those of NanoGrav and other PTA experiments and the sensitivities of future experiments such as SKA.

Collagen type I is the most abundant structural protein in the human body and its synthesis and secretion require tightly regulated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) function and intracellular calcium (Ca²⁺) homeostasis. The objective of this project is to investigate how alterations in ER and cytosolic Ca²⁺ concentration and dynamics affect collagen I trafficking and secretion. In the last three decades, several cities in the Middle East have been experimenting with the import and adaptation of international planning ideas and approaches. These activities mobilized transnational networks and circulated urban policies, plans, and projects, in and beyond the region. For example, cities like Doha, Dubai, and Riyadh started hosting mega-events and cooperating with the BIE, FIFA, and other international bodies for infrastructure planning and large-scale developments. UNESCO increased its presence in urban heritage preservation plans and projects. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture promoted, among other initiatives, the regeneration of historic cities across the region. This research project will problematize the transnational mobilization of concepts like mega-event planning, heritage preservation, urban regeneration, or sustainability, and analyse their adaptation into concrete policies, plans, and projects in Middle Eastern cities.

The research program focuses on the generation and measurement of angular momentum currents, both spin and orbital. In group-IV semiconductors, particularly Ge, it is possible to generate orbital and spin angular momentum currents through the optical orientation technique. The research activities that the candidate will undertake are based on the study of detectors for these currents, which generally rely on metallic materials with strong spin–orbit coupling, as well as on the design and optimization of an experimental setup for confocal microscopy, used to generate such currents in a localized manner. The project aimes at defining the secretome of a healthy and diseased heart and to investigate how these secreted molecules impact systemic circadian metabolism in heart failure. To this end, we will employ a cardiomyocyte-specific, in vivo labeling approach, allowing for the labeling, enrichment, and identification of proteins secreted by the heart during pathological cardiac hypertrophy. The identified cardiomyocyte-secreted factors will be functionally screened in vitro and then in vivo via AAV9 mediated cardiac-specific overexpression of selected candidates, followed by metabolic phenotyping.

The research activity initially consists of investigating existing solutions in the literature for antenna arrays capable of focusing power in the radiative near-field region. The most promising solution among those identified will then be numerically replicated, and Matlab scripts will be developed for the rapid characterization of its focusing properties. These initial results will serve as a benchmark for the next phase. The research activity, following this initial state-of-the-art study, will consist of studying the innovative family of Frequency-Diverse Arrays (FDAs) and verifying their behavior in power focusing applications in the radiative near-field region. Solutions with a high number of elements will be simulated (because they are more useful for extending the array's range of action), but the results will be experimentally verified with prototypes with 4 (or up to 16) elements.

The first objective of the project is to define a design flow for galvanically isolated DC-DC power converters operating at high switching frequencies (5-10 MHz), using GaN devices with a 650 V breakdown. The power ratings of these converters range from a few hundred watts to a few kW, and their potential application is the power supply section of server farms.The design flow must identify the circuit parameters that allow for optimizing converter performance, both in terms of efficiency and controllability.A second objective of the project is to identify the converter's dynamics and implement appropriate control strategies.The research project involves the development of a converter prototype, the verification of the control algorithm through its implementation in a microcontroller system.Appropriate techniques for characterizing the converter's performance and identifying its dynamic characteristics through perturbation measurements will be developed and used.
