Model-Based Anomaly Detection in Networks

Anomaly detection in network data is an important problem with applications ranging from fraud and cybersecurity to social and biological networks. The project aims to develop a statistically principled approach to anomaly detection based on probabilistic models for network structure. The main idea is to exploit model-based community detection methods, such as Stochastic Block Models (SBMs), to characterize the expected connectivity patterns of a network. Once the latent community structure and model parameters have been estimated, anomalous nodes or edges can be identified by measuring how strongly their observed connections deviate from those predicted by the fitted model. The resulting framework will provide interpretable anomaly scores grounded in an explicit statistical model of network structure.

Selection process

Per Titoli. La domanda deve essere presentata tramite la procedura online https://pica.cineca.it/unito/pem-2026-iv - per informazioni: incarichiricerca@unito.it Mandatory requirement for admission to the selection: italian Laurea Magistrale, or Laurea a Ciclo Unico, or an equivalent degree from foreign Universities, obtained no more than 6 years prior to the application deadline (i.e obtained after 13/10/2020). The Call for Applications (published on the University Bulletin Board under ref. no. 4687 of 21/09/2026), containing the procedures to participate in the selection process and the specific requirements for each selection, is available at https://webapps.unito.it/albo_ateneo/ .
