The field of design for social innovation is relatively recent, having developed in parallel with the major wave of social innovation over the past 2 decades. However, the time has come to reflect: we are now in a mature stage of social innovation. Design has not always been part of these processes; yet, where it has been involved, it has taken on multiple forms that call for critical research. PATHS will examine how design for social innovation is currently enacted within mature social innovation ecosystems: it aims to conceptualise the evolving roles of design and the existing limitations, as well as opportunities for its advancement. It will reflect on the cultural capacity of design to support social innovation ecosystems, examining how it contributes - or fails to contribute - to the cultivation of long-term thinking and vision. Finally, it will explore the political capacity of design to shape brokerage roles and and and to foster collective agency and governance.
